Tom always wanted to be a comic strip artist like Bill Watterson, Charles Schulz or Jim Davis. Unfortunately the newspaper comic strip was largely extinct by the time he tried to make a career of it, so when he became a children's magazine editor, he naturally seized the opportunity to write a comic strip. Initially, he drew it himself, but soon enlisted the help of Charlie so he could just focus on writing and layout... and because Charlie is much better.
